
A series of workshops for 18-24 year olds to help young people understand what employers are looking for and learn how they can show what they have to offer.
Objectives
- To help young people who have recently left (or are due to leave) full time education navigate the minefield of employment and training options open to them and help them decide "What's Next?"
- Provide Young People with an 'experience' which could be added to their CV
- To test models of engaging with this client group.
Achievements
- Following a competitive tendering process Prospects Ltd were contracted to deliver three events in West London for young people. 154 young people attended six workshops between December 2010 and March 2011 held in Wembley, Ealing Common, and Heathrow.
- The workshops aimed to help young people understand what employers are looking for and how they can show what they have to offer and were hosted by motivational speaker and TV personality David McQueen.
- The workshops were rated Excellent or Very good by 92% of the young people that attended. One attendee commented "It was surprisingly entertaining & very relevant. I enjoyed myself as well as learning new things", whilst another said "It helped me a lot. I'm going to go out there and kick some butt!"
- The Playing to Win Handbook provides useful information for young people who are looking for work.
- The workshop model is transferable to other age groups and other locations. The Playing to Win Final Report provides detail of the marketing, implementation and evaluation of the Plaing to Win workshops. It also includes recommmendations for those replicating these events.

- Workshop Itinerary
- The workshops focused on interviewing skills and understanding what an employer is looking for, this is acheived by asking the attendees to act as an employer looking to fill a position. They look at the job description and CV's from potential candidates, select two which are most suitable for the job, then prepare questions and interview candidates for the position. Finally they select a candidiate and reasons why they are rigth for the job.
- Faciltiators were on hand throughout the whole event to work with the attendees and act as the potential candidates at interview.
- At the end of the session the attendees reflect on what they have learnt and put it into practice by taking part in a mock interview.
- A Market Place of providers and colleges was available for the young people to browse and explore the opportunities on offer to them
- A number of work experience placements were available to 'win' for each workshop and attendees who have performed particularly well are nominated for them.
- The whole event was brought together by David McQueen who offers advice and motivation as well as encouragement to fully participate.
